The status of America as a global melting pot is perhaps best illustrated by the sheer variety of its culinary offerings and traditions. Those more familiar with European fare will be accustomed to the relative homogeneity of the menus of the United Kingdom or the relatively standardised meats of Germany.
America's cuisine comes in many guises. It incorporates elements of culinary traditions from its European forebears as well as the rest of its immigrant population from all across the world. Of course, many of these traditions have undergone changes that have served to render many of the original cuisines unrecognisable to their own people. Mexican food, for example, can be quite different in America than it actually is in the land from which it comes. Taco Bell is a far cry from the Yucatan. The same can be said of various other cuisines like Chinese or French food.
Nevertheless, American cuisine is all about generous portions, variety, relative affordability and innovation. A good example of American cuisine in a nutshell can be found along the highways and byways of the country. On Interstates and two-lane roads right across the country, drivers are notified that food is cheaply available at establishments with such imaginative names as “Eat.” Travellers can also see billboards advertising giant steaks or all-you-can-eat buffets for ridiculously low prices, especially when compared to offerings in Europe. And, again, the sheer variety of it all means one is assured of actually noticing a difference in the menus amongst the different establishments.
