World Food Day is held every year on October 16th. This is an opportunity to raise our awareness about the millions of people around the world who do not have enough to eat. Not all of these people are from some distant land, either, there are far too many hungry among us in the developed world. On October 16th stand up and let your voice be heard telling those in power that this is unacceptable, that our brothers and sisters need to be cared for. If we have gained so much civilization, why then are we unable to feed every person on the planet?
Every year, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization organize events around the globe to bring specific issues regarding the distribution of food to the public's attention. The FAO has tackled issues as far ranging as the need for FAIR trade to the potentially negative impact on food production the move towards bio-energy represents. These are issues that need to be addressed, yet the mainstream media gives them no coverage.
Involvement in World Food Day does not have to be in the form of attending rallies and waving placards. You can become involved by reading the FAO's website http://www.fao.org/getinvolved/worldfoodday/en/ , read up on the topics and then use your real power: your money. To affect real change will require that we as consumers hold corporations to higher standards - namely that they engage in fair trade, pay living wages to employees and that they do not pollute the environments of third world countries in the name of profit.
